What't the best way to let a patent expire?

posted Monday 19 of November 2012 by Amanda [intellectual property]

ANSWER

One can request express abandonment of the patent, which would kill the patent on receipt by the patent office. Most patentees opt for the passive option: simply not paying maintenance fees. This gives them time to change their mind about withdrawing the patent. Often, a patent must be withdrawn according to terms of contract. If so, then the express abandonment option is the best.
