I have designed and made a working model of an automotive gearbox. I am a pensioner and cannot afford the normal legal fees for filing a patent. I have a detailed description of how it works and will complete drawings in due course. I can file a provisional through the patent office here in South Africa. My question is : Can I file a provisional patent application without drawings in the initial stages. Then during the one year period I am allowed prior to filing a final patent may I alter and change the patent specifications, description drawings etc. as much as I wish. I am anticipating that I will be able to procure the services of a patent attorney who will then assist in filing an application in legalese, plus proper CAD drawings.
ANSWER
Because you're question concerns South African law, you should consult with a South African patent attorney. However, in the US and Europe, it would be possible to file the provisional application WITH SKETCHES. Formal drawings would not be required. However, if the drawings would be required to understand the invention, you must at least file the drawings (or equivalent sketches) with your initial filing.

Dr Patentsteins' Tips
When you think you might have an invention with sales potential, immediately discuss the idea with a registered patent practitioner | Ensure you sketch all significant elements of your invention on paper, writing as much detail and comments regarding its' operation | After creating any descriptions or sketching your invention, ensure a witness (or even two) sign the paper to support your claim |
