I have invented a writing system to preserve tribal languages. Can I patent this system?
ANSWER
Yes, you would have copyright protection in most developed countries in your writing system without doing anything in particular. However, it seems that you won't be charging anyone a royalty for using it because indeed you want it to be used, and to get it used, you'll probably have to make it available for free. You could perhaps give an express, written license for use in facilitating communications and for non-commercial use, but reserve all right in commercial use. So that if someone wished to advertise in that language using your script, they would have to pay you a royalty.
