Is a Bio-Chemical patentable? Are Enzymes patentable?

ANSWER

Yes, if the enzme is applied in a useful way. It's the application that is patentable in most countries of the world. Otherwise, if the enzyme has a broad general use, the enzyme itself could be patentable in the US.

Thank you Ask Dr. Patentstein for getting back to me. I am a little confused though. The patent would only apply to certain countries and not all? How can this be?

Patents represent national rights and are only enforceable in national courts. So, you need a patent essentially for every country in which you seek protection.
